Attorney General Primary
The Role of the Colorado Attorney General
The Attorney General leads the Colorado Department of Law and serves as the state’s chief legal officer. The Office, which is independent of other statewide offices, represents and defends the legal interests of the people of Colorado and the sovereignty of the state.
Core responsibilities include enforcing consumer protection and antitrust laws, handling criminal appeals, prosecuting certain complex white‑collar cases, overseeing the Statewide Grand Jury, and managing the training and certification of peace officers. The office also plays a major role in natural resource and environmental matters.
The Attorney General works closely with Colorado’s 22 district attorneys and partners with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. In addition, the Attorney General serves as the chief legal counsel to the governor, state departments, and the many boards, commissions, and agencies that make up Colorado’s executive branch.
