Why Running

"John is running for Senate to make Washington work for Coloradans. Just  like he’s done throughout his career, he will use his independent  perspective to bring people together to get things done — from lowering  health care and prescription drug costs to keeping our families safe  from gun violence, as well as protecting the state’s public lands while  combating climate change."

Policy Summary

  • Climate & Public Lands: Believes climate change is an existential threat and emphasizes an urgent, science driven transition to clean energy, climate resilient infrastructure, and conservation of Colorado’s public lands, highlighting legislative work to cut pollution, expand clean transportation, and protect natural resources for future generations.

  • Small Business & Entrepreneurship: Highlights his efforts to expand affordable capital, strengthen pandemic recovery programs, and broaden opportunities for women, Native American entrepreneurs, and employee owned businesses, aiming to ensure Colorado’s small businesses remain resilient economic drivers across the state.

  • Jobs, Economy & Workforce: Focuses on expanding job training, modernizing infrastructure, and building a clean energy economy while promoting fair wages and increasing the minimum wage, tax fairness, and family support policies like childcare to strengthen Colorado’s workforce and drive broad based economic growth.

  • Health Care: Underscores a commitment to expanding affordable coverage, including by adding a public option, lowering prescription drug costs by allowing Medicare to negotiate prices and capping out-of-pocket expenses for seniors on Medicare. Also advocates for strengthening the Affordable Care Act and ensuring every Coloradan can access high quality care regardless of income or geography, and for reproductive freedom for women and enshrining Roe v. Wade into law.

  • Immigration: Supports comprehensive immigration reform that includes a fair pathway to citizenship, prioritizes family reunification, restores and strengthens DACA protections, and responsibly manages the border. He backs the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021, advocates in state tuition for DACA recipients, and promotes a humane system with a secure border and a fair guest worker program to meet workforce needs.

  • Equity & Civil Rights: Prioritizes expanding civil rights and economic opportunity by supporting accessible workforce training, paid family leave, and small business growth for underrepresented communities, alongside reforms to policing and federal cannabis laws. He also backs the Equality Act to protect LGBTQ+ Americans and cosponsors major voting rights legislation to safeguard ballot access for historically disenfranchised groups.

  • Gun Violence: Emphasizes passing nationwide universal background checks, banning assault weapons, and closing loopholes that allow firearm sales without screening, while also supporting red flag laws and funding community‑based violence‑prevention programs to keep guns out of dangerous hands and improve public safety.

  • Space, Science & Innovation: Prioritizes strengthening America’s scientific leadership by expanding federal investment in basic and advanced research, supporting the elevation of the White House science office to Cabinet level, and pushing for long‑term strategic funding for NASA. He also advocates addressing space debris, sustaining Colorado’s leadership in aerospace innovation, and keeping U.S. Space Command in Colorado Springs to enhance national security.

  • National Security & Veterans: Focuses on improving conditions for service members and veterans by strengthening on‑base housing, expanding military family health coverage, supporting mental health care, and improving justice for survivors of sexual assault, while also advancing workforce training and community‑based VA health services. He additionally advocates keeping U.S. Space Command in Colorado, bolstering diplomacy and foreign assistance, and investing in cybersecurity and the American workforce to maintain U.S. competitiveness and national security.

  • Infrastructure: Advances major investments to modernize roads, bridges, transit, airports, and Western water systems while expanding clean energy transmission, EV charging, and lead‑pipe removal through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill. He also supports universal high‑speed internet access, closing the digital divide, and addressing the affordable‑housing crisis by expanding the Low Income Housing Tax Credit and other housing initiatives.

  • Marijuana: Calls for removing cannabis from Schedule I, expanding SBA lending and banking access through the SAFE Banking Act, and ensuring equitable participation in the cannabis industry while providing sentencing relief for nonviolent marijuana offenses. He also supports improving federal research access to cannabis to better study public health and safety impacts, including impairment.

  • Education: Supports expanding high‑quality, free universal preschool, increasing investments in public schools and educator pay, and making college more affordable through refinancing, larger Pell Grants, and a stronger Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. He also backs workforce training, apprenticeships, and technical degrees to create multiple pathways into good‑paying 21st‑century careers.
