A portion of judges from the Colorado Supreme Court, Colorado Court of Appeals, and from the twenty-three Judicial Districts across the state are up for retention (voters will decide if they will continue to serve another term). Per the Denver Gazette; “Under Colorado’s system of selecting judges, the governor appoints new judges from a short list created by citizen-led nominating commissions that screen and interview applicants. Judges serve for at least two years before voters decide whether to retain them to terms of varying lengths. Supreme Court justices, for instance, serve 10-year terms, while county court judges serve for only four years. The Office of Judicial Performance Evaluation (OJPE), created legislatively by the Colorado State Assembly, is an organization of independent commissions tasked with evaluating judges and recommending if they are meeting performance standards. All but two judges up for retention across Colorado have been graded as “meets performance standards”. The judges that do “not meet performance standards” are: William David Alexander, Tenth Judicial District (Pueblo County) Jeremy P. Boyce, Sixteenth Judicial District (Crowley County Court) A third judge, Dina M. Christiansen (Thirteenth Judicial District) was initially found to have not met performance standards, but a state commission revised her grade and instead recommended that she participate in a performance improvement plan.
