Policy Positions

  • Safety: Prevent future tragedies like the Tyler Zanella case by fostering a district culture of respect, accountability, and legal compliance—supported by fair wages, strong training, and protections for whistleblowers and mandated reporters.

  • Helping Staff Help Students: Ensure staff have the resources, training, and support they need to educate and care for students by advocating for better funding, competitive compensation, and innovative solutions that reduce burnout and improve outcomes.

  • Compassion for Families: Respond to families with empathy and transparency when abuse is suspected, and implement policies that protect children while honoring parents’ need for closure within legal boundaries.

  • Transparency: Promote open access to information and respectful dialogue, ensuring that transparency is not limited by paywalls or political bias.

  • Advocacy: Continue to be a bold voice for equity and human rights, standing up for staff, students, and families in the face of injustice.

  • Equal Education Opportunity: Defend every student’s right to a Free Appropriate Public Education, regardless of political shifts or changes to federal protections like IDEA.

  • Bullying: Support innovative, compassionate approaches to bullying prevention that help victims feel safe and redirect harmful behavior toward healthier mindsets.

  • Protecting Whistleblowers: Champion policies that uphold legal protections for whistleblowers and create a workplace culture where concerns are addressed before they escalate.

  • Common Sense Policy Review: Push for regular, thoughtful policy reviews to prevent harm and ensure the district’s practices reflect current standards for safety and accountability.

Why Running

As the parent of a victim former school bus attendant Tyler Zanella, Herrick has been an outspoken critic of PSD leadership. She has spoken regularly during community comment at Board of Education meetings and community engagement sessions with board members and Superintendent Brian Kingsley.  She also openly criticized District Attorney Gordon McLaughlin and his office for accepting a plea deal that dropped most of the charges in exchange for guilty pleas to only the most serious charge against each of the 11 victims.

A civil lawsuit Herrick filed along with another victim and their families against PSD and several of its employees is in settlement negotiations and should be resolved before the November election.

Her daughter now attends a PSD middle school.
